Paula is a lifelong sewer who was shown the basics of patchwork and
quilting at the age of 10 by her grandmother.
However, this early introduction to the craft didn’t really take
root until 1990 when she and her husband were living in Connecticut and
she was expecting her son. She
made a fairly basic baby quilt but was frustrated that the end result
wasn’t as good as she hoped, so when they moved to Montreal six weeks
after Jonathan was born, she signed up for quilting classes at Maison du
Calico in Pointe Claire, Quebec. There, a wonderful quilting teacher named Margaret opened a
whole new world for her and she hasn’t looked back.
She went on to take several other courses including a wonderful 2
week session with Jinny Beyer. In
her previous professional life she had been a corporate trainer, so before
she knew it she was busy designing training courses on how to make quilts.
To start with she ran courses anywhere they’d let her, like the
Newcomers Club in Beaconsfield, Quebec.
Her husband’s job then got them moved back to Connecticut where
she taught quilting at the local YWCA and the Poor Clares’ Monastery in
Stamford. In August 1995 she moved back to England with her family.
Just down the road from her house was an empty shop and she opened
Green Mountain Quilts and Crafts on the 1st of November 1995
which she ran successfully until April of this year. Paula is now focusing
on giving lectures and classes she has developed over the years and using
her design skills to develop new patterns.
